Knowing when to fold ‘em  (3 comments)

Posted on June 30th, 2006 by Random. About Culture, Random.

Every year a buddy of mine hosts a poker tournament for family and friends. I’ve been attending for 3 years and have been breaking even. This past tourney I went in with a brand new strategy, one I’d never considered before, and I won. Here is the story of how it went down and what I learned.

Fascination with Neverwinter Nights  (3 comments)

Posted on June 29th, 2006 by KarasDjun. About Computer, KarasDjun.

When Neverwinter Nights originally hit the shelves a few years ago I was a little disappointed. Yet again Greyhawk had been passed over for the more popular Forgotten Realms. The ruleset was going to be D&D 3.0, and it was going to be a single or multi-player game. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing special. [...]

Summer Reading?  (1 comment)

D&D gamers of a, ahem, certain age, probably own the original (1st-edition) Advanced D&D Dungeon Master’s Guide. And also probably haven’t read it in years, since it’s now a relic, an artifact, forgotten, a mere curiosity, maybe even an embarrassment to its slick and modern offspring. Bah! One of the finest and most important books [...]

Swinging for the Fences  (12 comments)

Whenever I create a melee oriented character in Dungeons and Dragons 3.x there is always one feat that I am guaranteed to pick up. It is the ultimate combat feat and allows a warrior to drop opponents that should be beyond his ability. That feat is the glorious Power Attack.

Highest Lowest Score  (1 comment)

Posted on June 19th, 2006 by Smite. About Board, Rant, Smite, Theory.

Balance is an important thing for a board game to get right. Variety of elements is a means to achieving balance (and interest!) – having a number of different things to do gives you options, replays, strategies. But how, then, to “score” these elements to determine a winner? One way that I want to look at in this article is the “Highest Lowest Score”. The intent is to automatically build the balance into the game, because each player is now responsible for making sure he does well with all of the game elements – to ignore one is to lose.

Nothing kills the experience of an enjoyable game like a bad sport. You know the type: they refuse to acknowledge a loss, they whine and complain when things aren’t going precisely as they planned, they disrupt the enjoyment of others just because they are losing, or they suffer from “sour grapes” syndrome.

For the Glory of RA!  (2 comments)

Keeping in mind Smite’s series on the ideal board game closet, I’d like to say a few words today in praise of one of my all-time favorite Euro board games. Reiner Knizia’s RA is a game that I love, and I will never refuse to play this game if it is proposed. Reprinted by Uberplay in 2005, the game is still widely available from most specialty board game retailers. RA holds the #7 spot in the all time BGG rankings, and is one of the best auction type games you will ever come across.

I happen to be a player in two different D&D campaigns that play on alternating weekends. The time constraints of adult life, right? That makes for a bit of a slow pace for character development, but on the other hand there are also some very positive aspects to it. One is the anticipation of looking [...]

Well, as is often the case, once a D&D player character of mine gets a few levels under his belt, I start feeling like the generic character record sheet just doesn’t cut it anymore. Mazzy, my Half-Orc, has buckets of weapons, combat modifiers that switch on and off all over the place (is he raging? [...]

Druidism: the nature of Nature Priest  (1 comment)

I’ve been playing a druid in a D&D 3.5 campaign for a couple of months now, and I find myself wondering about nature of the class. When I decided to play a druid it was because I’ve never played one before and wanted to try something new. I’ve always enjoyed the concept of shape shifting. [...]
