Look! I just rolled a SUPER critical!

You have GOT to be kidding me!!!!

I browse the Wizards of the Coast site every now and then for a giggle. I saw the Elite Opponents article on June 8th and my “Munchkin Sense” started tingling. How can they continue to print this stuff and call themselves professional gamers?!? It’s so shameful….

 The Bonus Creature: Thirty-Headed Tarrasque

This creature speaks for itself. The multiheaded template allows it to exist, but it’s still just plain wrong. The multiheaded template says this guy should have a CR 29, but I used the added Hit Dice to recalculate the CR instead. It seemed more realistic, and it’s still a TPK machine. I thought about adding the half-fiend template to it, but then it becomes an instant-kill machine (as if it isn’t already) because its blasphemy caster level is 106. This is probably the most powerful creature I can come up with, but I may surprise myself some day and outdo it.

In melee, it uses Power Attack for 50, leaving it +70 melee on all its attacks. It has ninety head-based attacks in 1 round, thirty of which can be instant-kill attacks (since making a DC 80 Fort save is probably impossible to most everyone it would face).

I adjusted its spell resistance in an ad-hoc manner. One suggestion is to use 11 + CR as its spell resistance, but I compared the old spell resistance and what someone would have to roll to overcome it to get the new value.

Skills Hide -8, Jump +14, Listen +94, Search +84, Spot +94, Survival +33 (+37 following tracks)

Improved Grab (Ex) To use this ability, the thirty-headed tarrasque must hit a Huge or smaller opponent with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can try to swallow the foe the following round.

Swallow Whole (Ex) The thirty-headed tarrasque can try to swallow a grabbed opponent of Huge or smaller size by making a successful grapple check. Once inside, the opponent takes 2d8+8 points of crushing damage plus 2d8+6 points of acid damage per round from the tarrasque’s digestive juices. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by dealing 50 points of damage to the tarrasque’s digestive tract (AC 54). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out. The tarrasque’s gullet can hold 2 Huge, 8 Large, 32 Medium, 128 Small, or 512 Tiny or smaller creatures.

Rush (Ex) Once per minute, the normally slow-moving tarrasque can move at a speed of 150 feet.

Carapace (Su) The thirty-headed tarrasque’s armorlike carapace is exceptionally tough and highly reflective, deflecting all rays, lines, cones, and even magic missile spells. There is a 30% chance of reflecting any such effect back at the caster; otherwise, it is merely negated. Check for reflection before rolling to overcome the creature’s spell resistance.

Frightful Presence (Su) The thirty-headed tarrasque can inspire terror by charging or attacking. Affected creatures must succeed on a DC 65 Will save or become shaken, remaining in that condition as long as they remain with 60 feet of the tarrasque. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Regeneration (Ex) No form of attack deals lethal damage to the thirty-headed tarrasque. The tarrasque regenerates even if it fails a saving throw against a disintegrate spell or a death effect. If the tarrasque fails its save against a spell or effect that would kill it instantly (such as those mentioned above), the spell or effect instead deals nonlethal damage equal to the creature’s full normal hit points +10. The tarrasque is immune to effects that produce incurable or bleeding wounds, such as mummy rot, a sword with the wounding special ability, or a clay golem’s cursed wound ability. The tarrasque can be slain only by raising its nonlethal damage total to its full normal hit points +10 (or 4,957 hit points) and using a wish or miracle spell to keep it dead. If the tarrasque loses a limb or body part, the lost portion regrows in 1d6 minutes (the detached piece dies and decays normally). The creature can reattach the severed member instantly by holding it to the stump.

Wouldn’t it just have been easier to say, “Oh I’m sorry, all your characters are incinerated by the will of the gods and will not be eligible for even being wished back into existence!” This is like the biggest waste of effort I have ever seen. Obviously no one will ever be able to approach this thing AND it will likely cause mass extinctions on whatever plane it happens to inhabit. So much for game balance! Sometimes I think it’s the creation of such ridiculous possibilities as this that makes me so crazy about running this game. Some things should just be left alone. Of course, I’m sure that now they’ll feel the need to make a “miniature” for this creature…. and I’m still making do with only a handful of skeletons and zombies in my figure collection!!!! No, I’m not bitter….I’m WAAYYYYY beyond bitter!

Well, it is CR 40. I mean, we have to compare it against the CR 38 and CR 39 creatures (oh wait, there aren’t any) before we go jumping to conclusions. I think that the writer was trying to make some sarcastic points about how to use and abuse template patterns for creatures, by going to the absurd length of giving things 30 heads. Realistically, there are some fun one-of-a-kind creatures that you might WANT to make with 2 or 3 heads. Again, the writer of that particular WotC column was going for munchkin-ness. As part of a series on “Impossible Creatures” that they normally run on April Fool’s installments, this would have been hilarious. I’m not sure why they published this as part of a “serious” monster workshop column.

You know, if you ever have played in or run a high magic campaign with players who get up above 20th, you know there are parties out there thay could take this. I mean, parties that could do 2000 hp a round kind of parties.

When you have people teleporting, enslaving outsiders, changing dimensions, wishing for and getting miracles, flying around, and all and all changing the very fabric of reality around them (like 20th level PC can) sometimes it’s just ok to see that!

No one in their right mind fights such a creature toe to toe. You don’t live to 20th for stupidity…

…No. Scry upon it from another plane, plan your assault, then gate in a squad of your 30 magically augmented flying drolem constructs with lightning breath attack from the left flank, while your undead army of 10,000 mounted skeletal forms and ice burst weapons attacks from the right. then come in from the ethereal flank quadruple hasted and hack a couple thousand HP off, then have Contingency spells up to ‘port you out of harms way on the return strike. On the second round, you unleash 20,000 epic magic arrows of tarasque slaying from your plane-hopping flying castle tinker gnome division, while you call in a favor from the gods themselves to turn the very land to a sea of frozen ice, and jagged stone. Through a few sacrificial Carnifex rogues and mages (M1 anyone?) into the fray to keep it occupied, and by the third round you simply wish it dead, and count the XP.
I mean, come, on - only AC 69? Practically made of paper mache’. Easy.

8-) (real question - is he kidding or not?)

30HT = FREE XP (or) HOW TO KILL THE BEAST & BE HOME IN TIME FOR DINNER

Yeah, I’m with The Emperor on this one. But even The Emperor has vastly understated the argument.
A Thirty-Headed Tarrasque vs. an Epic party worthy of a CR40 encounter?
Let’s break down this CR40 “monstrosity” by boiling it down to what counts:
    ______________________________________________________________________
    Thirty-Headed Tarrasque (henceforth “30HT”)

THE BAD NEWS: STR/DEX/CON = Godlike
    THE GOOD NEWS: Intelligence 3

Well, just one step into the analysis and Player Characters already have an overwhelming advantage over the 30HT. This thing is only half as smart as an ogre or an ettin (INT 6). Animal intelligence (usually a 2) is nearly as good as the 30HT. PC’s will be able to control their encounters with the 30HT using even the simplest of plans, and the 30HT will be unable to adapt or anticipate. The 30HT is just a witless killing machine — an almost useless weapon unless controlled by a greater intelligence (hmmm, a 30HT ‘beguiled’ & aided by an evil genius wizard — now there’s a scary thought!)

THE BAD NEWS: Melee = insta-death
THE GOOD NEWS: No Flight speed & No Ranged Attacks!

30HT looks *doomed*. It can’t fly or ranged attack, so any flying characters have the ability to ranged-attack it with impunity. Its ‘Frightful Presence’ is contingent on its attacking its opponent, so that’s no help to the 30HT. Ditto ‘Improved Grab’ ‘Swallow Whole’ ‘Spellcasting Harrier’ and all its other many melee feats.

The 30HT has a Jump skill of +14, thus a 30HT can only jump 8’ vertically. Factor in their maximum vertical reach (see PHB page 77) of 128’ and you get a total of 136’ from ground level. Now, since the 30HT is 50’ tall, that means a 30HT’s jumping max reach is just 86’ over its head. That’s not very good vs. flying attackers, especially spellcasters who have a ‘Close’ range of 25’ + 5’/2 levels.

THE (not so) BAD NEWS: AC 69
THE GOOD NEWS: Touch AC 10

If your PC’s find a way to get ranged touch attacks while flying, the 30HT is going down in a big way.
As for the AC 69: due to the artifact of the “autohit” in the d20 system, even a peasant can hit a tarrasque on a ‘20’. Furthermore, one in every 400 rolls is a guaranteed crit. So, find a way to spam enough attacks each round and the 30HT will eventually go down.

A Brief Aside on “Auto”s: The artifact of the “autohit” in d20 means *ALL* powerattackers needing a 20 to hit should *ALWAYS* full powerattack! Yes, this means your high-level fighter should always have a x4 critting two-handed weapon handy…

    at Level 20:
    20 point poweratt, 2H = +80 damage 1 in 20 swings vs. any AC
x4 crit weapon = +320 damage crit 1 in 400 swings vs. any AC

So, at a Full-Round Attack of 4 attacks:
    = Average of 1 megahit / 5 rnds for +80 damage
    = Average of 1 megacrit / 100 rnds for +320 damage

That’s a nice option in encounters where the target’s AC is so massive that you need a 20 to hit!

THE BAD NEWS: SR 52, ‘Carapace’, Immunities, Fort+100 Ref+67 Will+43
THE GOOD NEWS: DR 15/epic, Resist acid/cold/fire/electric 10

Any spell with a saving throw or SR is likely to fail vs. the 30HT. Ditto rays, lines, cones, and “Magic Missile” spells. On the bright side — once you’ve solved the AC 69 with:
    (1) ranged touch attacks
    (2) simple raw numbers of attacks or
    (3) spells with no save or SR
then a DR of 15 and resistance of 10 will do little to slow the attacks an Epic party will bring to bear. I suppose the DR makes approach #2 a little harder to pull off.

    BAD NEWS: hp 4,947
    GOOD NEWS: regeneration 40

Hope your PCs ate a big lunch, cuz it’s gonna take them a while to get through 5000hp! On the bright side, a regen of 40 is probably a fraction of the damage the flying attackers will be dealing each round, so let’s not overstate the inconvenience of the regen. Each round doing one attack of 55hp physical damage or 50hp non-fire elemental damage will sufficiently overcome the DR/Resistance to break even with the 30HT’s regeneration. That’s not much for an Epic party.
    ______________________________________________________________________

—– Example strategies for beating the 30HT —–

Orb Spells: The 30HT’s ‘Carapace’ only deflects rays, lines, cones, and “Magic Missile” spells, let’s look at the Orb spells. Orb spells are conjurations that make elemental Orbs (of Acid, Fire, Cold, Electric or Sonic) in the caster’s hand, which the caster then throws at the target as a ranged touch attack. Thus there is *no save* and *no SR*.
A mere level 30 wizard could fly & cast Orb of Acid (a Short-range Level 4 spell) from a distance of 100 feet above the 30HT’s head (150’ off the ground). These orbs would only do 15d6 damage, but they could be empowered and maximized with higher level spell slots. With a 30th level caster using one for flight, one for the killing ‘Wish’ and the rest of the day’s complement of level 6+ spells used on Orb spells and Metamagically enhanced Orbs, we’re talking about a lot of damage here. A Empowered & Maximized Orb does 135 damage. Twin spell would work here too. The wizard won’t kill the 30HT alone, but will make quite a contribution within a larger party.

Now, I agree this would be one brave wizard, since the 30HT has a killing zone that extends right up to 14’ below the wizard. Gutsy. But, of course, if we wanted to use a higher level wizard or homemade higher-level Orb spells (maybe even Epic ones?) with Medium or Long range then the damage would increase dramatically.

Finger of Death: A flying epic level wizard could spam off 20 ‘Finger of Death’s (it’s not a ray spell) over 20 rounds and average one failed save by the 30HT. (Followed by ‘Wish’.) But how does the wizard overcome the SR 52 you ask? Why, simple. By that level, an offensive mage could take Epic Spell Penetration for a +6 on caster level checks to overcome SR. Add Arcane Mastery (Complete Arcane) to Take ‘10’ on caster level checks. Now it only takes a caster level of 36 to automatically overcome the SR.

Smarts & Numbers: Draw the dumb lunk into a massive 150’ deep pit trap with sheer walls thoroughly greased with oil. (The 30HT’s Spot is massive, so the trap would have to be sufficiently complex or illusory to allow it to be drawn in unawares.) Once in the trap, have the nearby townsfolk drop boulders on its head / fire ballista into it (ranged touch attacks) until it dies. Finish it off with a ‘Wish’ for a merry town-wide feast of Tarrasque stew.

The Force: Or have Luke lure the 30HT under a massive hydraulic portcullis, then trigger the portcullis to drop on its neck…

Epic PCs will have vastly superior and unique powers & tactics to bring to bear in a 30HT encounter — the tactics I mention here (other than Luke Skywalker) I’ve kept to those generic ones available to even non-Epic characters.

Oh, and the Evil Beguiler idea mentioned earlier? At level 20, a Beguiler (PHB2) ignores SR, so a level 20 Beguiler flying 150’ overhead spamming 20 enchantment-compulsion spells into the 30HT will average 1 success. Said Evil Beguiler has a new pet 30HT!

People can actually take this, you’d be suprised, and about why even print this stuff and they call themselves gamer…that’s ridiculous…you always need one huge badass that can take down near anything just for something to aspire to, and I think most of you are thinking that you can’t go past level twenty, use your imagination…and get over it, who cares if it’s nerf’d, it’s still approachable….

Theoretically, even a low-level character with sufficient gold could defeat (note defeat, not necessarily kill) the big bad T. Just have to be a spellcaster, or have enough UMD to be able to use a whole bunch of Baleful Polymorph scrolls until it rolls a natural 1 on it’s saving throw. Statistically, only 20 scrolls are needed for the physical transformation. And just face it, how funny would it be to have a raging, eternally hungry toad in a little cage; of course the toad (”toadasque”?) would be nearly unkillable with its 4,947 HP. Just be sure to follow the rules — no feeding after midnight, and keep it away from dispells and antimagic zones ;þ

On a side note, the toadasque would be a very tempting target for a psion with True Mind Switch and a dispel… 30HT/L20 Telepath anyone? shudders

Hey, drizzt, I think I love you man.

Also, has anyone thought of a different way to get this thing on your side besides the psionic idea. Which is pure friggin’ genius, by the way.

My party does this once in awhile to tougher monsters, and it has a tendency to REALLY piss off the DM.

Throw in enough Calm Emotions, Charm Creature, and Charm Animal scrolls, not to mention a pretty kickass Wild Empathy check to top things off, and you just got an unkillable, unblastable, and very untransportable pet!!!
