Flash Tactics

Before I get into my topic for today I’ve got something to share. For the past few months I’ve been telling you that the Rolemonkeys podcast is a great source of entertainment. Well it is even more than that. This past week I was lucky enough to be the winner of a contest they held. I won game books to the M-Force game, which was the game they were playing at the time, and they even threw in a $30 gift card to Geeklabel.com (ding!). (For more on the Geeklabel guys I recommend the Geeklabel Radio Podcast.) So you see, the Rolemonkeys are not just a great listen but you might win some gaming swag, and that’s always a good thing. Thank You Mick, Chris, Max, Clay, and Mark, as well as a big thank you to Hex Games and Geeklabel.

Now onto the main topic!

I’d wager that every single one of us has wasted a little time during work playing Flash games. Heck when I was working Tech Support on Sunday mornings I would spend hours playing time wasters like Bejeweled while waiting for phone calls. These games had no purpose save giving us something pretty to look at while killing time. Maybe I was predisposed to them from years of Tetris play. I played a lot of Tetris, and Welltris, the computer kind. I was never good at the joystick version. I also had to play the escalating variety. I had a version that progressed to a tenth stage speed but never got faster. I could and did pay that for hours at a time. Ah… wasted youth. Nowadays there are hundreds of Flash games available for free on the internet. Unfortunately I’ve found that few of the puzzle games are that good. (Aquacubes? *shudder*) However there are some great strategy games to make up for it. Recently I’ve been playing 3 games that a friend of mine recommended to me over the past month. They are all from the MoFunZone.com site.

The first is called Tactics 100. In this game you assemble a force of units to take thru 10 levels of opponents. It is a simple chess board, turn based combat system. The reason this game is great is the way you get to build your army. You get to customize not only which units you want to take, choosing from Knights, Wizards, Archers, and Healers, but you get to customize theirTac100 abilities. You get 100 points to buy an army. You can spread it over as many as 8 relatively weak units or on as few as 2 very strong units. I had a lot of fun trying out different combinations of units, but I have to say now that the wizards are my faves. It also apparently has some kind of live multiplayer support but I haven’t tried it. I assume that it would require me to join something.

Lookin good so far...The second game is called Flash Element TD. It says that it was inspired by both Starcraft and Warcraft so it at least has a good pedigree. This game gives you a map to defend with various towers as waves of monsters run thru. It has an interesting mechanic where and I still lost!you collect interest on you gold between waves of monsters so you are encouraged to defend the territory with the minimalist units possible. This fame was very cool but now I just play it to ply the last board. All the regular boards and the 3 bonus boards are all pretty routine now. It’s just the “How are you still alive” board that I can’t beat. I still try every now and then but mostly I am playing…..

Xeno Tactic. This game is so cool. Again you are defending territory from invaders except this time the space is empty and you have to use your cheapest gun emplacements to make walls to keep the aliens from just running across the board. This game does a good job of training new players. It has 6 separate missions each harder then the last. You must complete the lesser ones before moving on to the harder ones. I cannot beat stage 6. I keep trying but it is nigh impossible. Often I know I’ve lost the board by the 6th wave of aliens. In mission 6 you need to survive 100 waves. On the bright side, if I lose that early I don’t waste too much time playing this game. Missions 5 and 6 can take a significant amount of real time to finish. I may have an Air Raid!inflated view of this however because this game lags a lot on my system. It may be hardware related but I suspect that it is probably because I am usually listening to iTunes when playing and iTunes is a bit of a resource hog. Even with the lag this is still worth playing. One of the hardest parts of Xeno Tactics is balancing air defense with ground defense. Only 1 in every 7 waves is an aerial attack, but as they can fly over all your gun emplacements they fly unhindered across the board. This can be devastating if you are too focused on stopping ground units.

I hope that if you give these games a try you enjoy them as much as I did. Also if you have any suggestions for favorite free online games out there please let me know. I’d love to try them out.

    Chris McD:
I have to say that i play enough Magic that I don’t find the Flash version appealing. However the site that it is on has a lovely game called Tactical Assassin that was quite fun. Thanks for the link.

I also need to say that I forgot to mention the one flaw in Xeno Tactic. There is some kind of glitch in the code where sometimes when you create a new gun it auto selects nothing, often looking like it selected the gun you just created, and if you click anywhere on the map it will dump all your cash putting “NAN” in place of your money. This is always bad and can cost you the game. The best way to avoid is to click the close ‘X’ on the selection section (look at the middle box on the left side of the image above) after you build a new gun. This also shows you how fun the game is in that it can have that bad of a glitch in it and still rate above an 8 out of 10. (Not to mention how fun it still is.)

I can make it to level 86 and die via air units at that level, My question is, has anyone managed to get past that or beat this game? And I have not encountered said glitch myself where I get NAN on the money, mind you I haven’t paid that much attention either as I usually spend my money really fast.

Aaron, I die at the exact same place. The friend who told me about the game has gotten farther and he says the air units get even worse later.

theres another huge flaw that throws the game off….the blobby green explodin aliens sumtimes explode on death and spawn outside the walls of ur turrets and just run across the map…this gets frustratin as u have to immediately place a turret or 2 in front of it just to kill em. I cant seem to get past lvl 5…i keep dieing at wave 42 or 43….plese help.

Ryan: I wouldn’t call that a flaw as much as a strategical consideration. You can keep the splitters from doing that by using right angles for your corners. The whole trick to getting to the later stages is to build a maze that allows you to keep the ground units busy and then build powerful anti-air cannons. At the later stages it sometimes takes me 10 levels or so to kill of some of the ground units. I just keep marching them back and forth. I use a L shaped maze to keep them busy. It’s annoying not to have the income from killing the ground units but you can keep them busy for a heck of a lng time wher the fliers just blitz across the screen.

I’ve made it to lev 93 and died to the 110,000 hp fliers. I killed about half of them but it was not enough. I think the trick is to use freeze cannons to keep the fliers over the AAs for a longer time.

See what you need to do i got up to level 95 i fuckedd up with placing my crap and ended up with a hole that they got through. soo close. but hey i use it to waste time at work lol. But what you need to do to beat the game is fuck everything just have one red plasma in the beggining to get a lil cash, but what you want to do it make a large block of upgraded DCA’s now dont try and upgrade them to red its too much money and wont be able to get alot of them, blue will work. now when u get alot of those up make a like 6 or 8 freeze turrets and upgrade them all the way and surround the dca’s with them why? because the whole game is secretly based on the flying aliens. those are the bitches that get you killed. Yes your game will end up with ALOT OF GROUNDED ALIENS and YES IT WILL LAG LIKE FUCK , but see if you can kill all of the flying aliens up to the final level and use the trick to get the aliens to go back and fourth in your maze, then you can sell all of your upgraded dcas and build alot of red plasma turrets and now we play the waiting game till all of the aliens are dead. Money. peace

Not managed to complete level 6 …. no ground unit manages to get past, it’s always the air units that get through - no matter how many anti-air guns i lay down.

Lag gets silly at times, but overall - i’ve loved trying to beat this game … tad disappointed that it appears to be impossible though.
